PS 234 After-School Program
Welcome - At the end of the school day, classroom teachers dismiss all students registered for our program directly to our staff, who greet students with a healthy snack and a smile. Students eat and socialize with friends, decompressing from the school day and gearing up for after-school.
Class Time - The sports, arts and enrichment classes that you select when enrolling your child in the program are taught by certified teachers, teaching artists and activity specialists. Each day, your child is dismissed directly to our staff. After a healthy snack, Depending on our offerings students will have the option to attend an early class at 3:30pm or a late class at 4:40pm.
Before and After Class - Students choose from a list of structured and open play activities, set up by our team leaders. These activities include: study hall, gym sports, yard play, indoor games, arts & crafts, music and more. This activity is built into your child’s daily schedule as a structured free play before and after their selected club for the day.
Students at PS 234 may also sign up for classes at the Downtown Community Center (DCC). Every afternoon our team leaders will pick your child up upon dismissal and safely transition them to our Center.

Soccer
Ooey Gooey Science
Every kid knows that you don't really learn anything unless you make a mess and get your hands dirty. This class focuses on everything oozy, grimy, slippery and slimy that exists in nature or can be made (safely!) in a test tube. Fun for all!
Arts & Crafts
This creative hands-on class has students working on a new and very cool craft project every week with their favorite after-school staff members!
Intramural Sports
Students develop fundamental sport skills, concentration, and sportsmanship while playing sports and games.
Dungeons & Dragons
In this class, students will learn everything they need to know to play the world's greatest role playing game: Dungeons and Dragons. Students will start by creating their own adventurer, with their own unique backstory, goals, and motivations. The players will then work together while they explore the vast worlds of D&D. Students might explore a dark dungeon, ruined city, a long forgotten temple deep within a dense jungle, or protect a village from the dangers that lurk beyond it. Students will solve puzzles, and work with other players while developing important social and emotional skills such as: empathy, problem-solving, teamwork, leadership and more. All while battling fantastic monsters, and discovering mystical magical items and other treasure.
Knitting/Crochet Club
Students will learn to knit and crochet while creating their own original designs.

Cartooning & Comic Book Art
DCC Yoga
This workshop teaches safe and developmentally sound yoga poses, breathwork, meditation and relaxation. Students build strength and flexibility, increase concentration and attention spans, and relieve tension and anxiety.
DCC Confectionary Creations
With a steady hand and a wild imagination, students will learn how to design and decorate palm-sized sweet treats. Ranging from cookies and cupcakes, to lollipops and jello molds, everything beautiful and wacky can be made here!
DCC Ballet
An introduction to ballet vocabulary and technique. Students develop strength, alignment, musicality, and the grace that is inherent in the form. Dancers in our ballet classes are prominently featured in each semester's dance performance.
DCC Claymation
This class will explore a range of techniques for developing concept, writing, designing, animating and editing stop-motion animation projects. Students will create armatures, puppets and sets, and complete the production process of an animated movie using professional capturing and editing equipment and software.
DCC Ceramics
Introduce your child to the world of ceramics! Develop motor skills and learn creative problem solving through projects aimed at stimulating imagination and creativity. Projects range from animal themed sculptures, making a new favorite cup or bowl, figurative work and more!
DCC Spa Lab
Discover the chemistry involved in making things that you would experience in a spa! Soaps, body scrubs, cosmetics, nail polish and color, bath oils, lipstick, perfumes and more! Students will make their own line of products that are safe to use at home!
DCC MY News
Does your child love watching videos on social media? Your Mini Influencer is now a Manhattan Youth Journalist. This class is an opportunity for students to learn how to write scripts, interview friends, and even our staff, record and edit videos. Students will also learn about internet safety and have the opportunity to create and operate a class fan page that can be shared, via private link, with family and friends.
DCC Intro to Spanish!
Se Habla Español! Your child will learn the basics of the Spanish language through a variety of activities such as brief conversations, directed dialogues, worksheets, and short writing exercises. Additionally, audio and visual aids, as well as short reading passages, will be utilized to enhance the learning experience. Learning a new language is a bridge, an essential tool in today’s global world, to learn across new different disciplines such as Science, Arts, History, Economy, and Business to achieve personal and professional goals.

DCC Appetite for Adventure!
A taste of travel for the brave hearted, students will engage the five senses as the classroom hops the globe for a delicious destination! By exploring flavors and styles of multiple cuisines, the travelers will learn about the many aspects that go into everyday foods.
DCC Super Heroes & Fairies
Inspired by their favorite comic book artists and armed with their imagination, student create characters and story lines, first in single panels, then in comic strips, and finally creating complete comic books at the end of each semester.

Never mind that chess is a great exercise for the mind that increases math and literacy abilities. Chess is a great game, and kids love it! We offer beginner, intermediate and advanced chess classes, as well as an annual tournament for students in our Manhattan Youth programs.

In this hands-on class, young filmmakers will conceptualize stories and bring them to life. Students will learn how to handle and use camera equipment, basic short composition, direction, collaboration, and basic editing skills in order to turn their story ideas into short films.

Get ready for a tasty adventure around the world! In this hands-on cooking class, kids will explore global cuisines as they learn to prepare fun, simple dishes from countries like Italy, Mexico, Japan, India, France, and more.
Each week features a new country and its flavors, along with a little cultural fun—learning about traditional ingredients, kitchen customs, and food-related stories. Young chefs will build confidence in the kitchen while practicing basic cooking skills like mixing, measuring, chopping (with kid-safe tools), and following recipes.

After-School Swim Lessons
We are proud to offer Youth Swim Lessons as a choice in our After-School Programs. Children receive the same instruction and swim experience as our Youth swim lessons. Your child will be picked up directly from their classroom at school dismissal, have a snack, and be transported to the Downtown Community Center for childcare activities provided by our After-school staff.

DCC Graphic Design
As digital technology continues to make its way into all aspects of our lives, the need for effective graphic design has never been greater. This course is ideal for students who seek an introduction to graphic design or have a general interest in learning how to create and communicate through visual media. Through a comprehensive look at topics such as layout, typography, color, space, balance, and hierarchy, students will be exposed to the most effective uses of graphic design in today's visual world. Students will create projects such as posters, stickers and t-shirts.
DCC Hip Hop
A high-energy, intense class for dancers of all experience levels. The dance studio will be hopping to today's pop stars as students learn individual and teamwork skills that evolve into polished dance numbers. All students participate in a Manhattan Youth dance performance at the end of each semester
DCC Making Your Own Adventure
In this club, participants will play and tinker with numerous table top role playing games including Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), Pathfinder, Knave, and more. Your child will learn about the mechanics of table top role playing games and use their knowledge to run their own games using the principles of game design.
DCC Global Cuisine
Get ready for a tasty adventure around the world! In this hands-on cooking class, kids will explore global cuisines as they learn to prepare fun, simple dishes from countries like Italy, Mexico, Japan, India, France, and more.
Each week features a new country and its flavors, along with a little cultural fun—learning about traditional ingredients, kitchen customs, and food-related stories. Young chefs will build confidence in the kitchen while practicing basic cooking skills like mixing, measuring, chopping (with kid-safe tools), and following recipes.
DCC Hydroponics
Ever wonder how plants can grow without dirt? In this exciting, hands-on class, kids will explore the world of hydroponics—a fun and futuristic way to grow plants using just water, light, and nutrients!
Students will build their own simple hydroponic systems, plant seeds, and watch their plants grow week by week. Along the way, they’ll learn about plant life cycles, root systems, and the science behind how plants get food without soil.
DCC Pottery Wheel
Working with clay has been all the rage. This class will explore all the different ways of creating with clay. Handbuilding and working on the pottery wheel helps develop motor skills, problem-solving abilities and creativity through a variety of stimulating projects. From animal-themed sculptures to crafting their own favorite cup or bowl, there are endless possibilities for imaginative, figurative, and function work.

MY Sports Academy
Our blend of intramural sports and non-competitive sports skills and drills is sure to meet your young athlete's needs! Students will engage in a variety of seasonal sports responding to the physical fitness and socioemotional need for students eager to have a fun environment, where they can reconnect with their peers, and their favorite after-school coaches and group leaders.
LEGO Projects
Kids will receive daily challenges of structures to build with Legos. There will also be time for students to explore on their own and in small groups, building creations of their own invention.

Children let their imaginations run free as they explore and experiment using clay, paint, found objects and other unusual materials to create their own masterpiece. This open ended class provides different stations with various art materials to help bring your child's vision to life!
Basketball
Students learn basketball skills, good sportsmanship, and sense of team spirit. Players are divided into groups based on experience and skill level. Each class session includes a lesson filled with drills and a game or scrimmage.
DCC Martial Arts
In this class, children will learn movement skills, self-discipline, self-control, practical karate techniques, and self-defense. The format of the class is designed to be enjoyable while also providing numerous benefits.
Dinosaur Club
Do you have a kindergartner or first grader who is obsessed with dinosaurs? Why fight it? Here's a place for learning about the prehistoric creatures, drawing them, talking about them, and, perhaps, roaring like a T-Rex.
DCC Wildly Creative Art
Calling all animal lovers who want to have a creative and FUN art class adventure! In this exciting art class, students will learn how to create unique artwork that is inspired by animals and wildlife while also learning fun facts about the life of each animal.
DCC Tammy Treats
No nuts! No dairy! No gluten! This allergy-free baking class allows your children to create delicious cookies and cakes galore by getting hands-on with ingredients safe for them to touch and eat. All recipes will be available to families in our end of semester cookbook!
DCC Wildly Creative

DCC Music Production
Are you curious about the process of creating and choosing music for popular movies and TV shows? Join our class to master the basics of music production and score your beloved TV scenes and movie moments with your own original music. Each week, you'll enhance your creativity and confidence by honing your musical abilities and gaining a deeper comprehension of music.

DCC Ceramics & Pottery Wheel
Introduce your child to the world of ceramics! Develop motor skills and learn creative problem solving through projects aimed at stimulating imagination and creativity. Projects range from animal themed sculptures, making a new favorite cup or bowl, figurative work and more!
DCC Martial Arts
Students learn self-defense, focus, concentration and discipline in a non-contact weekly martial arts workout. Classes are grouped by age and belt level. All levels work on forms, and bag work: kicks, punches, blocks and footwork. Sparring begins at yellow belt. At the end of each semester, we have an exhibition and test, where students have an opportunity for belt advancement (by teacher recommendation).
