Welcome - At the end of the school day, classroom teachers dismiss all students registered for our program directly to our staff, who greet students with a healthy snack and a smile. Students eat and socialize with friends, decompressing from the school day and gearing up for after-school.
Class Time - The sports, arts, and enrichment classes that you select when enrolling your child in the program are taught by certified teachers, teaching artists, and activity specialists. After a healthy snack, our clubs begin at 3:15 pm and end at 4:15 pm, and your child remains in our care until 5:50 pm!
Before and After Class - Students choose from a list of structured and open play activities, set up by our team leaders. These activities include: study hall, gym, sports, yard play, indoor games, arts & crafts, music, and more! This activity is built into your child's daily schedule as a structured free play before and after their selected club for the day, which ends at 5:50 pm Monday-Friday.
Pre-K Families!
Pre-K families! Good news! Manhattan Youth @ The River School will continue offering our working families Pre-K in After-School. Note: Pre-K after-school care begins right from dismissal through 5:50 pm. You must register for a minimum of 3 days in order to attend. Please do not register for individual activities; only select the Pre-K day that you are choosing to have your child attend. Our Pre-K offering includes: STEM, Art, Movement, Music, Performing Arts, Mixed Crafts, and Read-along activities.

Kids will receive daily challenges of structures to build with Legos. There will also be time for students to explore on their own and in small groups, building creations of their own invention.

A high-energy, intense class for dancers of all experience levels. The dance studio will be hopping to today's pop stars as students learn individual and teamwork skills that evolve into polished dance numbers. All students participate in a Manhattan Youth dance performance at the end of each semester

Jewelry Making
In Jewelry making we use many materials and techniques to make earrings, bracelets, necklaces, beads, and rings, including wire, paper, clay, an assortment of beads/charms, and string. We make our own beads out of paper and clay, and learn different knot techniques to make bracelets.

Students will learn the basic rules, skills, and sportsmanship to help improve their soccer game. All levels welcome!

Never mind that chess is a great exercise for the mind that increases math and literacy abilities. Chess is a great game, and kids love it! We offer beginner, intermediate and advanced chess classes, as well as an annual tournament for students in our Manhattan Youth programs.

Comic Book Art & Design
Inspired by their favorite comic book artists and armed with their imagination, student create characters and story lines, first in single panels, then in comic strips, and finally creating complete comic books at the end of each semester.

Students learn basketball skills, good sportsmanship, and sense of team spirit. Players are divided into groups based on experience and skill level. Each class session includes a lesson filled with drills and a game or scrimmage.

Diamond art is a craft that teaches how to create picture painting through the use of sparkling colored resin diamonds placed on a grid. Explore and create works of art that you will be proud of.
Discover the power of ART in a safe, encouraging and fun environment. Through their brush strokes, your child will healthily express their emotions and communicate their thoughts. Each session will allow your child to build their self awareness while simultaneously nurturing their creativity. In this hands-on class, young filmmakers will conceptualize stories and bring them to life. Students will learn how to handle and use camera equipment, basic short composition, direction, collaboration, and basic editing skills in order to turn their story ideas into short films.

Students conduct hands-on experiments with materials from everyday life. A combination of kitchen and eath science, Students will work on projects including plants and animals, the solar system, balls and ramps, paper airplanes, rockets, weather systems.
Painting and Sculpture

In this fun and hands-on art class, young artists will explore the exciting worlds of painting and sculpture through a variety of materials and techniques. Students will learn to mix colors, paint with different tools, and create their own 2D masterpieces—then bring their ideas to life in 3D using clay, paper mache, and recycled materials.

Dungeons & Dragons
In this class, students will learn everything they need to know to play the world's greatest role playing game: Dungeons and Dragons. Students will start by creating their own adventurer, with their own unique backstory, goals, and motivations. The players will then work together while they explore the vast worlds of D&D. Students might explore a dark dungeon, ruined city, a long forgotten temple deep within a dense jungle, or protect a village from the dangers that lurk beyond it. Students will solve puzzles, and work with other players while developing important social and emotional skills such as: empathy, problem-solving, teamwork, leadership and more. All while battling fantastic monsters, and discovering mystical magical items and other treasure.
Drawing & Painting
Students begin with sketching and drawing using pencil, charcoal and pastel. They will develop color palettes and brush stroke techniques using acrylics and watercolor.

All levels work on forms, and bag work: kicks, punches, blocks and footwork. At the end of each semester, we have an exhibition and test, where students have an opportunity for belt advancement (by teacher recommendation).

Together, the Dungeon Master (or DM) and players create an exciting story where their bold adventurers confront deadly perils. Even if the group doesn’t complete the adventure successfully, the good time and memories make everyone a winner!

After-School Swim Lessons
We are proud to offer Youth Swim Lessons as a choice in our After-School Programs. Children receive the same instruction and swim experience as our Youth swim lessons. Your child will be picked up directly from their classroom at school dismissal, have a snack, and be transported to the Downtown Community Center for childcare activities provided by our After-school staff.
